How to create and update a grid template

Disclaimer: This article is specific to the paid Grids Data Modeler upgrade. To create a grid template for your company, you need to have shadowgrid.io credentials. Contact your Buildout Administrator for access or email sales@buildout.com for more information.

To get started, log in to shadowgrid.io/login with your username and password. Click the New Grid Template button. From here, you can either copy over an existing spreadsheet or create a template from scratch.

Using your existing spreadsheet template

You can copy data from an Excel or Google Sheets file into a grid template. If you're working with an Excel spreadsheet, import your spreadsheet into Google Sheets using the instructions below. Google Sheets provides more data on the clipboard than Excel—giving you a bigger head start when building your custom models in Buildout Grids. Copying from Google Sheets and pasting to Buildout Grids will allow you to preserve all your formulas and most of your formatting.

To import data from an Excel file into a new (or existing) Sheets file: 

  1. In Google Sheets, create a new or open an existing spreadsheet.
  2. Click File and then Import.
  3. Choose the Excel file and click Select.
  4. Choose an import option:
    • Create new spreadsheet
    • Insert new sheet(s)
    • Replace spreadsheet
  5. Click Import data.
  6. If prompted, click Open now.

Creating a template from scratch 

Click the New Grid Template button and build your template from scratch. 

Casting

Create default casts with your grids in your templates. These casts will show up as “suggestions” when editing a Buildout document.

You can create as many suggested casts as you want. To get started, select the X icon on the sidebar navigation. You have the option to create a cast for an entire sheet or a selection of cells. Name your cast something that easily identifies the data for your team, then select the sheet or range you would like to cast. Click Save

Publishing your grid template

Once you are satisfied with your grid template, click the Publish button. Once your grid template is published, you will need to enable it for the appropriate users and property types in Buildout. To learn how to manage your grid template settings in Buildout, view this article

Updating your grid template

If at any time you need to update your grid template, log in at shadowgrid.io/login and open your template by clicking on its name. Changes to grid templates are saved automatically. To confirm your edits have been saved, look for the “All changes saved” message in the upper-right corner.
